FAR 91.413 requires all aircraft with an ATC transponder to have the transponder certified every 24 calendar months, regardless of whether you fly IFR or VFR. The 91.411 altimeter and static system certification is an additional requirement only for aircraft operated under IFR in controlled airspace. If you fly VFR with a transponder, you need the transponder cert. If you fly IFR, you need both.

Yes. FAR 91.411 and 91.413 apply to all aircraft, including amateur-built experimental aircraft. If your experimental aircraft has a transponder and you operate in transponder-required airspace, the 91.413 certification is required. If you fly IFR, the 91.411 certification is also required.

Yes. Any opening and closing of the static pressure system — including for avionics installation or repair — requires a new 91.411 certification before the aircraft may be operated IFR again. Similarly, any maintenance on the ATC transponder where data correspondence error could be introduced requires re-testing per 91.413. If Volar performs avionics work that opens the static system, the certification can often be completed during the same visit.

A combined IFR certification (91.411 + 91.413) on a standard Part 91 non-pressurized aircraft typically takes 2–3 hours, assuming no leaks or component failures. A transponder-only certification (91.413) takes approximately 1–1.5 hours. Additional time may be required if the static system has a leak or if components need adjustment.

Aircraft logbooks for sign-off, access to the aircraft, and the aircraft's maintenance records showing previous certification dates. Serial numbers for the altimeter(s) and transponder(s) are helpful. The aircraft does not need to be airworthy — it just needs to be accessible and have the avionics powered.

Yes. Volar provides mobile service throughout Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, and surrounding states. We travel to fleet operators, helicopter bases, corporate hangars, and any airport where aircraft cannot or should not be ferried.
